Mercury amalgam fillings are more and more being linked to M.E./CFS encouraging sufferers to consider having them removed and replaced with white ones.
Because of ongoing fatigue and candida, I had my nine amalgams changed in 1996. Although it was some time ago I don’t believe the procedures have significantly changed.
The replacements were done at a mercury free dental practice (Pomeroy and Rust in Bicester, Oxon) who are specialists in amalgam removal and they did a fantastic job, both in the replacement and in taking all necessary precautions to ensure no mercury was ingested during removal. The latter process involved using gowns, an extraction mask and filter. A doctor prescribed a chelating supplement to take before and after removal but I’m unable to remember what it was.
Before deciding on the removals, the dentist did a galvanometer test; a probe placed onto each metal filling. This gives a reading of the electrical conductivity of the metal. It’s not an actual test for mercury in the body but the higher the reading, the greater the conductivity and the more likely it is mercury may be leaking. Mixed metals give the highest readings, ie gold fillings in contact with amalgam react with each other and indicate a more rapid erosion of the metals.
The galvanometer test is quick and easy and usually reasonably priced. It’s non-invasive and accurately helps to make your mind up whether to have amalgams changed, and which ones may be causing most problems. I had my gold/amalgam mixed fillings changed first as they were causing the most problems (the teeth had begun to throb) and gave the highest readings on the test.
Prior to having the amalgams changed I’d been on anti fungal drugs for three years. In spite of an anti candida diet and drugs, the candida remained intense. Three months after amalgam removal the candida faded, I came off the drugs and never needed them again. My energy levels also improved significantly.
I found that amalgams caused problems through mercury leakage but also through metal intolerance. Before removal my teeth were hot and hurting all the time because I’d lost tolerance for the metals just like you do with earrings. We think of amalgams as a ‘mercury’ problem but metal intolerance seems to cause just as many problems.

When making a choice it’s worth checking they do the galvanometer test.
My fatigue lifted and energy improved considerably afterwards but it wasn't a complete cure for my M.E. See ‘My Story’.
